New waterfront mural will be dedicated Tuesday on West First Street in downtown Oswego
A 20-by-50-foot mural of a Lake Ontario sunset and the West Pierhead Lighthouse, installed Oct. 8, will be dedicated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, the city says.
A new waterfront mural will be dedicated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the site next to 5 W. Cayuga St. on West First Street in downtown Oswego, according to an Oct. 16 city news release carried by Oswego County Today. The 20-by-50-foot mural was installed Oct. 8 and shows a sunset over Lake Ontario, recreational activities and the historic West Pierhead Lighthouse.
The City of Oswego worked with artists from Mural Mania, who hand-painted the work in individual panels before it was taken to Oswego for installation. Oswego County Today reports it is the company's first mural in Oswego, and that Mural Mania has more than a decade of experience creating public art in neighboring communities. A small group of community members and city officials developed the first design, the article says, which the artists refined and finalized, inspired by classic "Welcome to" signs along well-traveled routes.
Oswego County Today reports the mural was funded entirely through the New York State Council on the Arts' Cultivating Havens for the Arts through Regional Murals, or CHARM, program, with the council's regional partner, CNY Arts Inc., facilitating the funding and the installation. The program supported 40 murals across more than 30 counties this year, the city said.
Mayor Robert Corradino said the mural "brings color, creativity, and energy to our downtown." Mural Mania owner Mark DeCracker said the project began with "a surprise phone call in August" and became a 1,000-square-foot mural. The city has invited the public to the dedication ceremony.
