Diesel spill near Big M prompts coordinated cleanup in Oswego
Oswego firefighters and city crews worked Friday, Oct. 16, to contain a diesel spill near Big M Supermarket as heavy rain carried fuel toward storm drains that discharge into the Oswego River, the Oswego Fire Department said. The department responded at about 9:20 a.m. to West First and West Utica streets and identified a commercial vehicle with a reported fuel leak as the source; crews used absorbent material, containment booms and storm drain covers, and Public Works closed parts of West First and West Second streets. The department requested the Oswego County Hazardous Materials Team, and the state Department of Environmental Conservation was notified and will provide follow-up oversight. The release did not say how much fuel spilled or whether any reached the river.
