India's finance minister says easy exits and excess liquidity weigh on the stock market

India's finance minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, said easy liquidity has made it easy for investors to leave Indian equities, which have slipped nearly 12% since January, CNBC reported. "Because of the ease of liquidity, ease of availability, people are even exiting easily," she told CNBC in an interview on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank meetings in Bangkok on Friday. CNBC reports that foreign portfolio investors have sold more than $33 billion of direct Indian equities this year, according to the depository firm NSDL, and Sitharaman called continued capital outflows one of the biggest risks for India in 2027. She said India would not be "hurt" by spillover if the global artificial intelligence bubble burst.
