The Nutter

Aisle Nine

I have been keeping my grocery receipts. All of them. Fourteen months of loyalty card purchases, sorted by date, in a spreadsheet, because the discounts did not look random to me. They are not.

The items the loyalty card puts on sale are not seasonal and they are not promotional. They follow a cycle — roughly three weeks — and the cycle adjusts based on what I bought in the previous one. Not in the obvious way, where you get a coupon for something you already buy. In the other way. The discounts appear on things I have never bought, but things that pair with what I already bought. Every cycle, the gap between what I have and what they are offering narrows. They are steering me somewhere, one purchase at a time, and they are patient about it.

I tested it. For four weeks I bought nothing but bread. Different brands, but only bread. The next cycle, the discounts shifted to things that complete a sandwich — butter, peanut butter, deli meat, jam. So I bought only those. The cycle after that moved to things that go with sandwiches: bags, napkins, plastic wrap. Every time I followed the discount, the next one advanced. Every time I broke the pattern, the system recalculated and started from a different angle.

I am not talking about targeted advertising. Targeted advertising sells you what you already want. This is sequential. There is a destination, and the discounts are the turn-by-turn directions.

Now, I know how this sounds. A man with fourteen months of grocery receipts claiming his supermarket is leading him somewhere. I understand if you want to stop here.

But think about what a loyalty card actually is. It is a tracking device you carry voluntarily, in exchange for saving forty cents on yoghurt. It logs what you buy, when you buy it, and where you buy it. And from fourteen months of that, it knows something else: what you never buy at all. It maps your routine better than you could describe it yourself. That is not a theory. That is the service agreement and everything it lets them calculate from it. The only question is what is being done with the picture it has drawn of you.

I do not know where the discounts are leading. I know they are leading somewhere. I know the pattern has not broken once in fourteen months. And I know I am not the only one whose receipts are telling a story they did not write.
