New York raises tax credit for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers to $800

New York will raise its personal income tax credit for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers from $200 to $800 for individuals and from $400 to $1,600 for married couples under a law Gov. Kathy Hochul signed, WNYT reported. The higher credit applies from tax year 2027, claimed when filing in 2028, and eligible volunteers may claim either the credit or a qualifying local property tax exemption. State Sen. Monica Martinez said the credit had stayed unchanged for nearly two decades, and Assemblymember Karen McMahon said volunteer fire departments across New York are facing declining membership. Firefighters Association of the State of New York President Donald Farrell called it "a real thank you to the men and women serving today."
