Empower survey: a third of Americans may have lost track of retirement savings from a past employer

A third of Americans (34%) may have retirement savings from a previous employer that they have lost track of, according to a study released Oct. 19 by Empower, a retirement services company; the figure rises to half of Gen Z and 45% of millennials. The company says 53% of respondents have changed employers three or more times and 54% say savings spread across multiple accounts make retirement planning harder. The study is based on online responses from 2,005 U.S. adults, collected July 30 to Aug. 1, 2026 by an independent panel provider and weighted to be nationally representative, according to Empower.
