Southern Italy truckers' fuel protests disrupt deliveries, then ease as government lines up aid

Truck drivers' protests over high fuel prices have disrupted deliveries in southern Italy, leaving some supermarket shelves partly empty and some petrol stations without fuel, Euronews reported; Deputy Infrastructure Minister Edoardo Rixi called the disruption in Campania "severe," affecting supermarkets, petrol stations and hospitals, according to Reuters. Hauliers have blocked roads and motorways since last week, but their representatives said Thursday that roadblocks would be lifted in Sicily after talks with the government, and truck drivers in Calabria suspended their protest, Reuters reported. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government was lining up aid for truck drivers and farmers, including compensation for high diesel costs, and offering police escorts to trucks passing roadblocks, according to Reuters. Bruno Zuccarelli, head of Naples' order of physicians and dentists, said fuel shortages were making it harder for doctors to reach hospitals and for ambulances to respond.
