The Nutter

Thirty-Eight Microseconds

The Global Positioning System does not run on the same clock as the surface of the earth. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is published physics, corrected for daily, acknowledged by every agency that operates the network. The atomic clocks aboard GPS satellites tick faster than identical clocks on the ground by thirty-eight microseconds per day, because gravity is weaker at orbital altitude and time moves at a measurably different rate up there.

Thirty-eight microseconds. Every day. The Air Force calls it a relativistic correction. Einstein predicted it. The Hafele-Keating experiment confirmed it in 1971 by flying cesium clocks around the world on commercial aircraft and measuring the difference when they landed. The science is settled. I am not disputing the science. Seven years later, GPS launched. Running on the correction from day one.

I am disputing the model underneath it. Every GPS calculation, every coordinate, every orbit depends on a mathematical framework called WGS-84, published in 1984. It defines the earth as an oblate spheroid. And the thirty-eight microsecond correction is not a raw measurement. It is the difference between what the clocks read and what they should read if WGS-84 is correct. The system does not measure the shape of the earth. It assumes the shape and then corrects everything else to fit.

I built the spreadsheet. Model a flat plane with a localized gravitational field and recalculate the timing offsets from scratch. The thirty-eight microseconds disappear. You get a different correction for a different geometry, and the precision does not go away. It moves. The only thing that changes is the model. The most precise navigation system ever built does not know what shape the earth is. It was told. And it has been confirming what it was told for forty years.

The earth is flat. I know how that sounds. I have been sitting with it for months, and the spreadsheet has not changed. GPS does not prove the planet is a sphere. GPS proves that someone in 1984 chose a spherical model and calibrated a constellation of satellites to enforce it. Thirty-eight microseconds is not a measurement of curvature. It is the cost of maintaining a shape that does not match what is underneath it.

Every satellite in the sky is correcting its clock right now. Not to match reality. To match the decision. And nobody has ever published the uncorrected data.
