St. Louis City win the U.S. Open Cup on penalties for the club's first trophy

St. Louis City SC beat the Columbus Crew 5-3 on penalties on Wednesday in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final, winning the first trophy in the club's history, CBS Sports reported. Goalkeeper Roman Burki left the game after being kneed in the head in the 78th minute and was taken to a hospital, conscious and able to move, CBS said, and backup Benjamin Lundt saved the first penalty of the shootout. It was the first Open Cup final decided on penalties in 11 years, and St. Louis City, which began play in 2023, claimed the cup in a city whose teams won it 10 times between 1920 and 1988, according to CBS. Midfielder Daniel Edelman, who scored the winning penalty, told CBS Sports, "It's the first trophy for me and for a lot of guys in this city."
