New York State

Investigation finds State Police discipline was light in substantiated domestic abuse cases involving its own employees

New York Focus reported Oct. 21 that State Police disciplinary records it obtained show the department imposed limited punishments on employees in domestic abuse cases that State Police investigators had substantiated. The records cover 18 employees, with most of the alleged incidents between 2014 and 2024, and New York Focus said the files are not exhaustive because the State Police have resisted releasing discipline documents and the records include only allegations the department confirmed. Eight of the 18 faced censure and five days or less of suspension or lost vacation, only one was fired, and New York Focus found evidence of only three facing arrest, the outlet reported. A State Police spokesperson told New York Focus that "every allegation of domestic violence is taken seriously and subject to a thorough and impartial investigation," and that the department has "zero tolerance for domestic violence or misconduct by its members."
