AdkAction report describes how independent grocery stores in the Adirondack Park cope, and what small grants did
AdkAction's new report, "Staying Open: The State of Adirondack Grocery Stores and Opportunities for Action," draws on conversations with eight independent grocers in Clinton, Essex, Hamilton and St. Lawrence counties, the New York Almanack reported. The article says there are roughly 30 independent grocery stores in the Adirondack Park and that comprehensive data on them is limited. AdkAction tested whether small grants could address grocers' barriers by awarding microgrants to five of them, funded by the Adirondack Community Foundation, and says one grocer's cardboard compactor replaced six to eight hours of weekly staff time and $400 a month in removal fees.
