McDonald's ends its World Cup sponsorship after more than three decades
McDonald's said late last week it would no longer be an official FIFA World Cup sponsor, ending a partnership that began in 1994, Restaurant Dive and Marketing Dive reported. Morgan Flatley, the company's global chief marketing officer, said in a statement that sport and culture remain important and that the company is sharpening its focus on "distinctive McDonald's experiences," and the company described the move as an evolution of its marketing model. Adweek reported the exit followed McDonald's largest World Cup campaign this summer, which spanned more than 110 countries; Restaurant Dive and Marketing Dive said more than 100 markets. On the Q2 2026 earnings call, CFO Ian Borden said the campaign "underperformed versus our expectations," Adweek and the Dive sites reported. Restaurant Dive and Marketing Dive reported that the company attributed one-third of its Q2 traffic loss to the campaign, that same-store sales rose 0.8% in the quarter, and that it committed nearly $80 million to the 2026 World Cup partnership, citing SponsorUnited data for the spending and Kantar data for the campaign's lift to brand scores.
