Gabon says it has restored social media access after an eight-month suspension
Gabon's media regulator, the High Communication Authority (HAC), announced Saturday that access to social media had been restored after a suspension imposed on 17 February, the BBC and Africanews reported. The HAC said at the time that online content was fuelling conflict and division, and the opposition called the suspension an abuse of power, according to the BBC. Africanews reported that Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and Instagram were shut off, that legal challenges to the ban were all rejected, and that many people used VPNs to get around it. According to Africanews, the HAC said users are now required to provide formal identification, and that it is working with Meta, TikTok and YouTube to improve content moderation. The BBC said it had approached the regulator for comment.
