Ukraine and Russia said Friday they had agreed to a ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky, brokered through US first lady Melania Trump, The Moscow Times reported. Russian military chief Valery Gerasimov said Russian troops would stop firing from 4 a.m. local time on Oct. 27, and Ukraine's General Staff said it would observe the ceasefire from the same hour, so that aid can be delivered and residents can leave, The Moscow Times reported. The White House said 1,700 to 2,000 residents remain in Oleshky, down from 24,000 before the war, and the report said Moscow and Kyiv each accuse the other of blocking supplies to the town. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said negotiators from Ukraine, Russia and the United States agreed to technical-level meetings in the first half of November in Abu Dhabi, and a US official said the next talks could be in a couple of weeks in Abu Dhabi or Switzerland, The Moscow Times reported. On Sunday Zelensky told Ukrainian television that a trilateral meeting would take place in November, and that "if it's a territorial issue, it must be addressed at a leadership level," according to the Straits Times (AFP). The Straits Times reported that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Oct. 23 that a trilateral meeting was planned in the United Arab Emirates in November. The Moscow Times reported that Russia continues to demand that Ukraine cede all of the Donbas region and that Kyiv rejects giving up land it holds. It also reported, citing the Russian Defense Ministry, that the two sides swapped 270 servicemen each on Friday, and that Ukraine's acting prosecutor, Anton Kovalskyi, wrote on Telegram that more than 19,000 Ukrainian civilians, including 762 children, had been killed since the full-scale invasion; the sources I read give no comparable figure from Russia.
