Flocks of sheep and goats walk through central Madrid for the Transhumance Festival
A flock of 1,250 sheep and 160 goats walked from Casa de Campo across the Puente del Rey and through Madrid's historic centre on Sunday, Africanews reported, in what Euronews described as the festival's 33rd annual edition. Africanews said crowds of residents and tourists lined the route, shepherds wore traditional dress and, at Plaza de la Villa, officials staged the traditional payment of 50 maravedis per thousand animals, a symbolic ceremony it dated to 1418. Africanews also reported that this year's route was changed to avoid Puerta del Sol, where housing campaigners have set up a protest camp after the eviction and subsequent death of an 87-year-old local resident.
