Trump campaigns for Mike Rogers in Michigan; El-Sayed's campaign rejects the attacks

By D. Marlowe · October 27, 2026 · First reported October 25, 2026 · Edited by C. Fletcher

President Trump spoke Sunday at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, for Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, and the Associated Press reported that he called Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed a "jihadist" and said El-Sayed was on the side of terrorists. Rogers, a former congressman, repeated allegations linking El-Sayed to the Muslim Brotherhood, the AP reported. The AP wrote that there is no evidence El-Sayed has any affiliation with the group, and noted that his half-sister wrote on social media in 2012 about their mother's involvement decades earlier. El-Sayed has denied ties to extremist groups and described attacks on his loyalty as shameful, the AP reported; his spokesperson Cole Wozniak said in a statement that the campaign was focused on lowering costs. Bishara Bahbah, a founder of the group Arab Americans for Trump, which has since changed its name, described the president's remarks as racist, according to the AP. Rapper Nicki Minaj appeared on stage and urged votes for the state's Republican ticket, the AP reported; the AP and the Guardian both reported that Trump made remarks about her physical appearance and said he hoped she was not insulted. Straight Arrow News reported that former President Barack Obama rallied for El-Sayed in Detroit on Saturday and said "we have seen this movie before," and that Rogers said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Canadian tariffs on autos worry him somewhat. The AP described the race as among those that could decide control of the Senate.
