Evacuations after fire at Newport, Oregon seafood plant over possible ammonia in smoke; residents later allowed to return

A fire broke out Sunday morning at a Pacific Seafood processing plant in Newport, Oregon, and the city ordered evacuations over concern that the smoke contained ammonia, according to the Associated Press (carried by ABC News) and Straight Arrow News. City spokesperson John Fuller told the AP the cause was not known and no injuries had been reported. Straight Arrow News reported that the evacuation zone started at a half-mile and was widened to one mile, and that it was later lowered to a "Be Set" level, which lets residents return but asks them to be ready to leave. The AP reported that officials urged people to stay indoors and wear masks outside and were investigating possible ammonia contamination; Fuller estimated hundreds of people were affected. According to a company statement given to the Lincoln Chronicle and relayed by Straight Arrow News, no one was hurt and all employees were accounted for. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said the state was monitoring the fire.
