Two men killed by falling trees as Storm Boelo follows Storm Austen across the UK and northern Europe
Two men died on Sunday after falling trees struck them as Storm Boelo hit the UK, the BBC reported: a man in his 20s whose car was hit by a tree in Finchley, north London, around 12:40 GMT, according to the Metropolitan Police, and a 60-year-old man in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, according to Police Scotland. The Energy Networks Association (ENA) said 161,400 properties in the UK were without power as of 15:00 GMT Sunday, and that 838,700 properties had lost power across Storm Austen on Friday and Storm Boelo, the BBC reported. AFP, in a report carried by Phys.org, cited the ENA as saying more than 400,000 homes had lost power at some stage during the storms, and put the number without power in Britain at more than 82,000, with nearly 60,000 in France and at least 10,000 in Germany. The two reports give different totals and the pages do not say why. Gusts peaked Sunday morning at 85 mph at Machrihanish in Argyll and Bute and 84 mph at Stornoway and Capel Curig, according to the BBC; AFP gave 84 mph (135 kph) in Argyll and Bute, and BBC Wales reported the 84 mph at Capel Curig on Saturday. The Met Office had an amber wind warning for Scotland and parts of northern England until 21:00 Sunday, which has now expired, the BBC reported. AFP also reported that French utility Enedis counted 288,000 homes without power at the peak of Austen on Saturday and 59,000 at midday Sunday, that about 90 flights were canceled at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport by AFP's count, and that a hospital in southwestern Germany limited itself to emergency cases during an outage. BBC Wales reported flooding, fallen trees, rail disruption and ferry cancellations in Wales.
