SUNY Oswego's provost proposed ending the December Commencement ceremony starting in fall 2027, The Oswegonian reported
SUNY Oswego's Office of the Provost presented faculty on Oct. 19 with a plan to discontinue the December Commencement ceremony starting in the fall 2027 semester, The Oswegonian reported Oct. 30. The university estimates it would save $57,721 a year, according to a provost's office slideshow obtained by The Oswegonian. The slides say Oswego is one of three SUNY campuses that still hold a December ceremony, with Plattsburgh and Oneonta, and that the event takes a combined 10 days of setup and teardown in the Deborah F. Stanley Convocation Hall, the paper reported. Of 247 December 2025 graduates, 19 asked to walk in May instead because of weather risks, according to The Oswegonian. The paper said the plan follows other cost measures aimed at a $4 million operating deficit for 2025 to 2026, and that the offices of the president and provost did not respond to its request for comment before publication.
