Schneider National makes Norfolk Southern its main eastern rail partner, replacing CSX

By D. Marlowe · November 3, 2026 · First reported November 2, 2026 · Edited by C. Fletcher

Schneider National will make Norfolk Southern its primary rail provider in the eastern United States, under an agreement the two companies announced on Oct. 29, Trucking Dive and FreightWaves reported. CSX had been Schneider's primary eastern rail provider since 2008, a Schneider spokesperson told Trucking Dive. The companies said the deal would expand domestic intermodal capacity and help win freight now moving by truck. FreightWaves reported that the announcement gave no financial terms, no estimate of added capacity and no transition date. On Schneider's Oct. 29 earnings call, chief executive Jim Filter said the transition would begin in November with Jan. 1, 2027 as the target implementation date, according to Trucking Dive, and he said the benefits of Norfolk Southern's proposed merger with Union Pacific were not assumed in Schneider's expectations, calling the merger "the icing on the cake" for the partnership.
