Russian bombs hit a school used as an aid center in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region; regional head puts the dead at 29

Russian aerial bombs hit a school used to hand out humanitarian aid in the village of Komyshuvakha, in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region, on Monday, Nov. 2, and regional head Mykhailo Semikin said on Tuesday that the death toll had risen to 29, the BBC reported. France 24, The Hindu and Deutsche Welle, reporting Monday's count, gave at least 26 dead, the figure France 24 attributed to Semikin and the BBC to President Volodymyr Zelensky late Monday. The sources describe one attack, not two: every report names the same village, the same school and the same day, and the 26 and the 29 are Ukrainian officials' counts at different times. Zelensky said a first strike hit as people arrived for the weekly aid distribution and a repeat strike then hit the shelter where they had taken cover. Officials said at least nine 3,000-kilogram bombs hit the village, according to the BBC; Semikin said two rescuers and four police officers were among the dead, and the BBC reported 10 injured and 48 missing. The Russian military had not commented publicly, the BBC said. The strikes came hours after a six-day ceasefire around the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in neighboring Kherson region ended on Sunday, and US envoy Steve Witkoff said US, Russian and Ukrainian officials would meet in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 10 and 11.
