Bangladesh garment workers protest over wages for a fourth day as police fire tear gas
Garment workers in Bangladesh protested for a fourth day on Tuesday, Nov. 3, demanding a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 taka, up from 12,500 taka, and police fired tear gas in Ashulia and Dhaka's Mirpur area, CNA reported. The protests began on Saturday and continued after the government formed a six-member wage board on Nov. 1 to review garment pay, according to CNA and Al Jazeera. Dozens of people, including several police officers, were injured, CNA reported. Nearly 700 factories shut on Monday, CNA said, and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association said demonstrations disrupted 529 factories on Sunday and affected nearly a million workers, according to Al Jazeera. Labor Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury urged workers to return to work and said the wage board would begin its deliberations shortly, Al Jazeera reported. The minimum wage was last revised in December 2023, and factory owners told CNA they face rising operating costs and softer demand in key export markets.
