Americans vote Tuesday in midterm elections for control of the House and Senate
Voters across the country cast the last ballots of the 2026 midterm elections on Tuesday, 3 November, with control of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives at stake, The Guardian reported; Republicans held both chambers going into Election Day. ABC News reported that races for governor are also on ballots around the country. More than 57 million early votes had been cast nationwide as of Monday afternoon, ABC News reported, citing the Election Lab at the University of Florida, while The New York Times put the early vote at about 50 million in its live coverage on Monday night. The campaign closed amid several legal fights. A federal judge dismissed a Justice Department lawsuit over Alaska's Senate race, where two candidates named Dan Sullivan are on the ballot, and the department said it would appeal, Straight Arrow News reported. The Guardian reported that the Justice Department planned to send a record 1,000 election monitors to polling places, a move critics called voter intimidation. Advertising across House, Senate and governor's races cost about $7.1 billion this cycle, according to a Wesleyan Media Project analysis cited by ABC News.
