U.S. carries out strikes near the Strait of Hormuz, officials say; Trump says "we haven't been doing any fighting for months"
The U.S. military carried out what U.S. officials described as limited defensive strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, three U.S. officials told CBS News. A senior U.S. official told CBS News the strikes targeted Iran's Qeshm Island after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired at an American aircraft, and a U.S. official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity said the targets were Iranians using surface-to-air missiles against U.S. assets. Iranian state television reported explosions on Qeshm Island, the AP reported. Earlier Monday, in a speech in Washington, President Trump said, "I don't know if you even call it a war, because we haven't been doing any fighting for months," the AP reported. In a Truth Social post that day he said a deal "could happen" and that "Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible," CBS News reported. Vice President JD Vance told reporters he and the president "feel pretty good about the prospects" for a negotiated settlement, according to the AP. Asked whether he was considering striking Iran after the midterms, Trump answered "no," Newsweek reported, and the White House said in a statement that he has a "wide range of options available."
