Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles charge six more lawful permanent residents with lying on naturalization forms about voter registration

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California said Monday that six lawful permanent residents of the Antelope and San Fernando valleys in Los Angeles County have been charged by federal criminal complaint with making false statements on their naturalization applications. The complaints allege that each registered to vote and voted in California while not a citizen, then denied on the naturalization form having claimed citizenship or registered to vote, according to the release. A criminal complaint contains allegations only; the release says all defendants are presumed innocent, and each would face a maximum of five years in federal prison if convicted. The six residents, ages 31 to 52, of Palmdale, West Hills, Agua Dulce and Canoga Park, are each charged by criminal complaint with one count of making false statements on a naturalization application. Five of them were arrested Monday, the release says. The department described the cases as part of "Operation Protect the Vote," which it called an effort to root out fraud in U.S. elections, and First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said in the release that 34 defendants have now been charged in it, all of them on the list his office gave California officials. The defendants have not been indicted, and it was not clear whether any had lawyers, The Guardian reported; the federal public defender's office in Los Angeles did not respond to its inquiry.
