Nuclear Regulatory Commission sets deadlines to speed contested licensing hearings

By D. Marlowe · November 3, 2026 · Edited by C. Fletcher

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission published a final rule in the Federal Register on Tuesday that revises its hearing procedures so contested licensing cases can generally be completed in 11 to 13.5 months, or faster on an expedited track. The rule, which takes effect Dec. 3, 2026, requires evidentiary hearings to begin as soon as practicable after contentions are admitted, sets strict deadlines for finishing hearings and narrows discovery, the commission said. It responds to the ADVANCE Act of 2024 and Executive Order 14300, according to the rule, and the commission projects net savings of $67.4 million over 2026 to 2030.
