Snap settles a social media addiction suit brought by two teenagers before trial
Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, settled a lawsuit brought by two teenagers who alleged that the app was designed to be addictive and contributed to their mental health problems, lawyers for the plaintiffs said on Monday, according to CBS News and Engadget. The terms were not disclosed. Snap was the last defendant in the case to settle, after Meta, Alphabet's YouTube and TikTok resolved the claims against them. Snap said the parties were "pleased to have been able to resolve this matter in an amicable manner," according to CBS News, which reported that the case had been set for opening arguments this week; Engadget reported that jury selection began last week and that Snap chief executive Evan Spiegel had been expected to testify. The suit was one of several bellwether cases; in a separate case earlier this year, a jury found Meta and YouTube liable and awarded $6 million, both outlets reported.
