Weather

A frosty start, then sunshine — and a dry weekend that warms into the 60s

Fulton dipped to about 30 at dawn on Friday. Sunny skies follow with a high near 53–54, another night near freezing, then highs of 57 Saturday and the low 60s by Sunday, with no rain in sight.

Good morning, Oswego. It was a crisp one at daybreak. The airport in Fulton bottomed out around 30 degrees at 6:55 a.m., and at 7:25 a.m. it was 32 under clear skies with no wind at all, while Syracuse read 34. A few patches of fog are possible before 10 a.m., and after that it should be a bright, cool autumn day.

Alerts: As of 7:52 a.m. Friday, the Weather Service listed no watches, warnings or advisories for Oswego County. Downstate, NWS Upton has a Frost Advisory for Southern Westchester County (and four southern Connecticut counties) from 11 p.m. tonight to 9 a.m. Saturday, with temperatures as low as 33; "Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold," the advisory says. On the water, the Weather Service listed no marine alerts for Lake Ontario or other New York waters.

Today: Sunny, with a high near 54 and a northeast wind around 8 mph, according to the Weather Service. My own blend of the forecast models comes in a touch cooler, near 53. Buffalo's forecasters expect a few shallow lake-effect clouds near the lakes to fade by midday, far too thin to produce any rain.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy and cold, with a low around 32 and a light east wind of 1–7 mph. Patchy fog may form after 11 p.m. My blend agrees, near 33.

Saturday: Sunny and a little milder, with a high near 57 and a light south wind around 5 mph — the NWS and my blend land on the same number. Saturday night turns clear and chilly again, down to about 34.

The week ahead: High pressure keeps it dry and tranquil through Monday, Buffalo's forecasters say. The Weather Service has Sunday near 63 and Monday near 60, with a dry cold front Monday dropping Tuesday to about 50. My blend runs a bit cooler on Sunday at 61 and matches on Monday at 60. The first slight chance of showers doesn't show up until next Thursday night.

Tropics: Hurricane Vance is in the eastern Pacific with 75-knot winds and a pressure of 982 mb, moving north-northwest at 6 knots — no threat to our area.
